If you ended up losing one of your teeth today, do you know what options you have regarding tooth replacement? It is not uncommon for people to instantly think about dentures. While dentures are a great option for tooth replacement they certainly aren't the only option on the market. Furthermore, there are a lot of partial truths and flat out lies people assume to be true when it comes to dentures. The question is – how much do you know about what is and isn't true regarding dentures?

Your Dental Check-Up Days Are Not Over

It is a common misconception that because you've replaced your teeth with fake teeth you never have to go back to visit the dentist again. This misconception stems from the fact that people assume the only thing your dentist cares about is your teeth. Truthfully, your dentist cares about your entire mouth. In fact, it is not uncommon for your dentist to catch a health problem before your physician does. For example, did you know some of the earliest signs of diabetes start in the mouth? If you stop going to the dentist just because you no longer have real teeth, your dentist can't catch medical issues such as this.

You Can Eat Anything

Another big myth when it comes to dentures is the belief you can eat whatever you want. While you can eat pretty normally there are some precautions you should take. It's not true with some foods. You shouldn't try to bite into an apple or corn on the cob with dentures. You need to eat softer foods especially when you first get them. Cutting food up is advisable and watching the types of foods you are eating is important.

They'll Last Forever

A common misconception about dentures is that they last forever, so you only have to have to get one set. It's just not the truth. You can prolong the life of your dentures by cleaning and taking care of them. You'll still need to replace them every few years to make sure they are in good shape. It's important to take care of your dentures so they will only need to be replaced every three to eight years.

Learning the truth about dentures will allow you to separate fact from fiction. They are a great way to continue enjoying food and quality of life. Talk to your dentist if there are any other myths you need to debunk.
